Our Urban Coordinator, Sarah Stack, was invited to speak at the annual British International Studies Association conference on a roundtable with Cynthia Enloe on: Reflections on gender, peace and security with Northern Ireland’s feminist activists and peacebuilders.

“As we approach the 25th anniversary of UNSC Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, this roundtable takes stock of decades of peace and feminist activism in Northern Ireland in conversation with global feminist discourses and practices. We reflect on women’s contributions to the peace talks and peace process, trace strategies for action and explore the meanings of peace and security for different generations of feminist activists and peacebuilders.”

The roundtable included Dr Avila Kilmurray, Social Change Initiative, Danielle Roberts, Reclaim the Agenda, Tara Grace Connolly, Youth Activist, and Sipho Sibanda, BME Women’s Network, led by Dr Maria-Adriana Deiana, Senior Lecturer in International Relations and Founding Co-Director of Centre for Gender in Politics.

Reflecting on the roundtable, Cynthia remarked:

I feel so fortunate to have gotten to listen to you each, to you together, to you here on “this island”  which is , you make clear, is always-in-motion  —- even when “stuck”, you all and each are keeping things positively “unsettled”. I look at this photo and read “Phenomenal Women” and re-read my notes of your thoughts… And keep learning…

Many thanks to Dr Maria-Adriana Deiana for organising the session and for including our project and toolkit.
